the skinny on the fate of ftg

So here's what I've been doing: blogger's decided that they will no longer support FTP publishing, which is how I've done this blog for almost the past 9 years. So.... instead of painting? I'm coding, just to try to get the blog to stay mostly the same for now, because what I don't have time for right now is a site-wide redesign. And the address of the site has to change as well - so the blog will now be at blog.frenchtoastgirl.com, and it has to happen by May 1.

Sigh.

tweet!

I've finally gone and started a Twitter account. If you want to hear the bits and comments that are too small for a post, I'd love it if you'd join me!

Here goes: http://twitter.com/frenchtoastgirl. (Easy enough to remember, right?)

And - if you have an account and want me to follow you, leave a comment and introduce yourself! I am especially interested in following other artists, parents, musicians, and those who are generally creative. :)

the antidote for the overwhelming

I wrote recently about being overwhelmed, and thank you so much to the other mama/artists who wrote me. I've been considering hiring a (gulp, again, can't believe I'm saying this) Personal Assistant as a helper a few times a month to help me get out prints and do mailings. I am currently weighing the pros and cons of this, and part of it is the whole question of if I am important enough to require that kind of help, and if I am comfortable with asking for help in that way. Laundry help - easy! Filling orders, I'm not certain yet. I need to figure out how to have more time to do what I really love. Are any of you artists out there grappling with the same kind of thing? I would love to have more insight.

p.s. ~ about this time last year I started a Fan page on Facebook, which to me seems to be the height of egotism, but isn't a blog sometimes as well? :) My motivation for doing it was to keep in touch with people I only knew online and focusing on FTG news, rather than on Elena news, even though many times it's much the same... In any case, I've finally posted a "Fan me!" button over there on the right, and feel free to sign up if you'd like.

If you're reading this, it means we still don't have a router, darnit! I don't mind taking a break from the internet, but I do mind not having a choice about it. :)

facebook + fans

Some of you know that I'm on facebook now, and holy moley, is it addictive! I'm really enjoying getting back in touch with old friends, and keeping up-to-date with others. Right now I'm only linking up to people I know personally (as opposed to people I know online). But since I am an all-inclusive kind of girl, I was trying to think of a way around it...

So I made a fan page! Anyone (who's a member of facebook) can become a fan and get updates, news, and even read blog entries right there.

And yes, it seems mighty surreal to me to say "Fan Page" in conjunction with myself. :)

NaBloPoMo time!

View my profile on NaBloPoMo

Hey kids! It's NaBloPoMo time again! I've done it since (I think?) year one, and it's lots of fun. Every day in the month of November, I will post something new. This year I'm going to have a theme; The Month of Magical Thinking. As in this post, I will be concentrating on making what's usually a pretty hectic month a magical and joy-filled one as I make a conscious decision to make the most succulent choice every time. Friend me up and I will link right back to you, I would love to hear how your journey is going. :)

And this year, I'm going to give a prize! Just sign up at NaBloPoMo headquarters and post every day to qualify.

ps ~ This isn't this month's badge, but it's my favorite one. :)

Catching up

Things have been ca-razy busy here, and I apologize for not posting more. I've been working on new illustrations I can't show yet, knitting and crocheting just because it's fun, working on the kids' Halloween costumes, and oh yes, there's that day job. I'm also getting into gear for NaBloPoMo in November, are you?

I do have some new posts up at Miomarmo (where we'll also be doing NaBloPoMo, which should be really fun!). In case you missed them there, some recent ones are...

Turn an old shirt into a new skirt. Creative recycling! As shown above
Do you walk enough?
Proposition 2 (or, 67 Square Inches). Proposition 2 "stops cruel and inhumane treatment of animals, ending the practice of cramming farm animals into cages so small the animals can't even turn around, lie down or extend their limbs."

Because I'd really like to know

I'm trying something new - my first ever poll!

While it's partly because I just like to try new things, it's also prompted in a part by a spate of image-grabbing that I'd like to put a stop to. I'm thinking of blocking all of my images from Google's image search, but not if that's how most of you found me! So, cast your memory back there, lord, and see if you can remember how you got here. Please select one of the buttons below. Thanks!

Winners!

Congratulations to all of you who knew that this painting of Persephone was done with juice from a pomegranate! I actually was worried I was beating you all over the head with it, but I guess not. :) (Please read the above links if you didn't get it, they're fascinating.) This was so much fun, I think I'm going to do contests on a regular basis!

Our winners, pulled randomly out of a hat by my three lovely assistants are:

♥ Kim K. in Western PA
♥ Robyn
♥ Stephanie B.

Please email me if you are one of the lucky three so that I know where to send your print!

In other news, we had a sick chick here last week (not me, Angela) which seriously put the kibosh on any free time I had planned. So if you've ordered prints from me, I completely apologize! Your prints have been all packed up and delivered to the post office today, and you should be receiving them soon. Sophielicious was off from school today and wanted to help, so you'll be seeing her handiwork in your package as well.

Doesn't she look so professional? I think I should give her a raise.

help me pick!

I'm going to submit work for my local art association's member show this October. I can submit two paintings, and I (thankfully!) don't have to sell them. They might not use both, depending on space. There are awards to shoot for, but I mostly just really want to see my paintings up on the wall, eat cheese and crackers, and mingle with like-minded art lovers. Soooooooooo:

Suggestions! What should I send in? I have till maybe over the weekend to figure this out (gotta get framing!) Thanks!

This just in: The incomparable Martha Stewart has a new blog. This is a Good Thing.

Go ahead, gawk

I've been exhibited
at Gawker Artists!

Gawker Artists promotes the works of artists of all mediums. Participating artists receive free profile pages and a select group have their images published on Gawker Media titles. When you spot one of these images, click on it to read about the artist or browse our collection by artist name, medium or location.

Go click on the page and spread some love - maybe I'll move on up to the homepage, or just maybe someday you'll see my paintings on your favorite Gawker Media site (mine is Jezebel).

unplugged

I'm going on a media fast for a week, which means I will be going online only for work. No blogs (sob!), YouTube, movies, video games, TV, newspaper, or magazines allowed; and I am going to see how long I can hold out before giving in to my regular radio station (which is commercial-free.) The rest of the Miomarmo gang and I have been working through the Edit Your Life series, and this is the last part. I plan to use my new-found time on painting, spending more time outside, and taking naps.

See you in a week!

ps ~ The month of July is my webaversary; I've had this site for 9 years now. Remember what it used to look like?

so I've been thinking

...of making this a poster. (The original is around 18" x 24", so it's meant to be large.) I'm going to send out files for a test print next week. If I like it, I'll add it to the store.

I'm toying with doing this as a poster as well.... what do you think?

back to nature

I have two brand-new posts up on Miomarmo, the super-fantastic environmental/lifestyle website started by me and my like-minded coworkers and friends:

♥ One about gardening and using recycled materials to help your plants get started.

♥ And one about identifying backyard birds with a great website tool.

♥ And if you haven't seen the post about Earth Day chalking in the park, for Petey's sake, go check it out!

miomarmo

Right around Earth Day, I showed a little sneak peek of a project I've been working on at my day job, that is so dear to my heart. And now I can show it off: TA-DAH!

Miomarmo is a new site for basically everyone. I know, that sounds so corny, but it really is true. Basically, we're a group of friends and coworkers from varied backgrounds, each doing our take on saving the planet. I'll be writing about everything from teaching your kids about protecting the earth, to organic food, crafts from recycled materials, yoga, you name it. My coworker and her husband are building their own "green" house from the bottom up, and will be talking about everything from wind and solar power to the environmentally friendly paint they choose. If you're a pet owner, we're going have lots of posts on animal welfare. We have a life-long vegetarian writing about his choices. There will be posts on science and global issues. Of course we will be writing about how to green up your office, because we practice what we preach! And my boss (who at the start of my employment didn't even own a car and used to bike our newsletters to the post office by way of a little cart attached to the back) will be covering my ultimate favorite topic, how all the little changes you make can truly add up to make a positive difference in the world.

Right now it's a blog to start, but we will be adding to it - with fair trade products from around the world that help support the communities that create them, to original items designed by an artist you know and love (hint, hint, ahem.)

It's a site that's meant to inspire. To show how all of us - no matter what background we come from, or what our jobs are - can make a change in the world for the better. Because it's your world too.

A sneak peek

I'm so excited to be a part of a new project that has been simmering for a long time. I can't show more than a peek right now, but it should be launching sometime this week... just in time for Earth Day. It features something I'm passionate about, with people I love to work with (my talented brother did that amazing round bit you see above.) Details are coming soon.... anyone want to venture a guess?

feathers and swirls

The wonderful husband has fixed the computer! Scanner's hooked up (see?), email's on the way ... testing for prints not far behind.

I've been spending my creative time at night drawing anything that comes to mind, and then painting whenever and wherever I can. These new paintings aren't supposed to be perfect, far from it. Anything that strikes my fancy gets drawn. I'm not obsessing over details, slavishly researching images (which I couldn't do once my studio's computer was down anyway), or waiting for the perfect moment. My only rules are that I try to draw or paint something every night, and that if something inspires me, no matter how small a detail, I have to give into it and let myself paint it somehow.

This mostly happens with the kids in the afternoon; I can either put down a layer of coffee and let it dry in time to paint details at night, or the coffee wash has already dried and I can have an all-out painting session with the kiddos. (When you let go of perfectionism, you can work on paintings with three preschoolers around you, on your dining room table.)

The absolute best thing is the watercolours I found for the kids that actually have GLITTER in them. Of course, we have been doing lots more painting lately so I can crack into their supply of glittery watercolours. The scan doesn't even begin to do it shimmery justice.

A detail - you can see the glitter in the headband, and the gloves and some of the feathers are sparkly as well.

Lots more to come. ♥

click-click-click

My computer, sad to say, is making the click-click-click sound that signals hard drive failure. That and the fact that all we can get on the screen is a little folder with a flashing question mark, which is much less scary then the sad mac with Xs for eyes, mean that some major repairs are in order. (I'm writing this from my work computer.)

This means, until Paul fixes it (hopefully this weekend), I have no scanner; so you can't see the three gorgeous new paintings I've been working on; no email past what I could get online this week (so if you've written me something important in the past month and I haven't answered you, please send it again or be patient because I can't access my old emails right now); I can't take any print orders because (a) I don't know if I got them, and (b) I can't scan them, and (c) I can't print them. Things are backed up okay, I just can't get to them.

In a way, it's kind of nice because it's forcing me to spend more time away from the lure of the screen in my studio; and it's also incredibly frustrating for all the reasons listed above. So I'll just have to keep painting and have a little art show when my scanner does get back in action.

Is anyone else having issues with Blogger? I keep timing out, it takes hours for my posts to show up, and now this has been the second time I checked the site to see that my entry from yesterday has been unpublished. I need this like a hole in the head.

Go pick your prints!

The order form's up and ready for action! If you've already emailed me, I'll be writing back to you tonight about your order. (Correction, they're still being sent out.)

Most requested so far:

♥ The reading fairy (detail here, and many more fairies to be found here, btw)
Edgar Allan Poe/lar Bear
Balance (which I have hanging on my fridge!)

While I am still trying to go through and tag all my posts, in the meantime, if there's something you remember, go to Google and type in "french toast girl" and whatever you remember. That's what I do!

Other quick note: I've gone through my Yahoo Groups list and deleted any members whose messages have bounced or email address is out of date. If you think you might have gotten lost in the shuffle, please check (or sign up!) here to make sure you're included in news and announcements.

drumroll, please...

I get numerous requests for prints of my artwork. I sat down and tried to decide which ones were worth printing, how many should I make, what would appeal to the most people, etc. And then we came up with this:

1. You tell me what painting you want a print of. Anything I have ever posted on this site is up for grabs.
2. I make it and send it to you.
3. Enjoy!

I'm working on coding the forms, setting up the paypal stuff, but I figured that making the announcement would inspire me to hurry it along. If you can't wait till then send me an email and we'll figure something out.

The details thus far:
* 5" x 7" print for $5
* 8" x 10" print for $10
* shipping included in the price
* printed on gorgeous glossy paper
* long-lasting inks in bright colors

It's going to just be that simple, from start to finish, because all I ever wanted to do is make art and share it.

So here goes. ♥
